The side event will showcase the vital role of women in ocean conservation and sustainable oceans related issues. Bringing together experts, policymakers, civil society organizations and industry representatives, it will highlight innovative approaches and cross-sectoral collaborations that advance SDG 14 while promoting gender equity. Speakers will share key insights and recommendations, fostering dialogue to empower women as essential drivers of sustainable ocean action.

As part of the United Nations Ocean Conference and aligned with the objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, we commit to advancing gender equity as a cornerstone of sustainable ocean governance and marine resource management.

Women play a crucial role in ocean-related sectors such as fisheries, aquaculture, coastal management and private companies linked to the ocean. However, their contributions often go unrecognized or undervalued. This commitment aims to promote the full and meaningful participation of women in ocean science, marine policy-making, blue economy leadership and seafood producers, recognizing that inclusive decision-making leads to more just, resilient, and sustainable outcomes to make visible the invisible.

The event is co-organised by: UN Etxea, The Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM/CSIC), UNESCO, The Department of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability of the Basque Government, Oceánicas (IEO-CSIC) and AZTI.
