INTERNSHIPS
CALLS FOR APPLICATIONS 2026
For 2026 it is planned to launch 5 calls for applications for internships in the United Nations for young people from the Basque Country.
Those internships will take place at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, and at the Office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland and in the UN headquarters in NY .
In addition to these international training experiences, UN Etxea has agreements with the three Basque universities to tutor undergraduate and postgraduate students in their curricular internships.

BBK-UNESCO Internationalisation Internships
Call scheduled for October 2026.
Every year, the BBK Foundation together with UN Etxea offers two training internships at the Headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in Paris.
21 young people from Biscay have received this six-month long training internships since 2014. All the beneficiaries of the internships have had the opportunity to further develop their professional careers at UNESCO.

Human Rights Training Programme
Call scheduled for May 2026.
UN Etxea, with the collaboration of the Directorate for Human Rights and Victim Support of the Basque Government, organises annual training on the United Nations Human Rights Council of Geneva and its standard-setting instruments.
This training programme provides a practical approach to the UN human rights protection mechanisms. It combines a theoretical part with practical and face-to-face participation in different bodies of the Human Rights Council.

Internship for Internationalisation in Human Rights
Call scheduled for March 2026.
UN Etxea together with the Directorate of Human Rights and Victims’ Assistance of the Basque Government offers an annual training internship in the field of Human Rights to a young person from the Basque Country at the headquarters of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland..
The beneficiary will join OHCHR for a period of 6 months.

Internship for Internationalisation in Education for Sustainable Development
Call scheduled for May 2026.
UN Etxea together with the Directorate of Natural Heritage and Adaptation to Climate Change of the Basque Government offers a specialisation grant at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) with the aim of providing a professional internship in the field of Education for Sustainable Development to a young person from the Basque Country.
This internship will be carried out in the Section of Education for Sustainable Development at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

Call for participation in the UN High Level Political Forum
Call scheduled for May 2026.
UN Etxea, with the support of the Department of Equality of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, launches this call to select three feminist women to participate for 3 days in the United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF).
This experience seeks to strengthen the feminist movement in Bizkaia through the active participation of three women in the HLPF. For three days, accompanied by UN Etxea, they will be able to learn first-hand how feminist advocacy is articulated at the international level, establish networks and bring lessons back to their collectives.

UN internships
We have managed the UN Grants programme since 1997, with funding from the Basque Agency for Development Cooperation.
Since 1997, some 190 young people have been awarded these grants and joined UNESCO offices in impoverished countries, thus beginning a professional career in international cooperation and the UN.

Training internships in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve
With the support of the Basque Government’s Natural Heritage and Climate Change Directorate, UN Etxea runs two annual grant programmes for a paid practical training residency in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.

With the support of the Department of Basque and Culture in Biscay Regional Council, UN Etxea awards grants for paid practical training within its culture for development programme.
