Side event during the UN High-Level Political Forum

Bermeo Tuna World Capital together with UN Etxea and with the collaboration of the Hawai Green Growth Hub, will lead the round table anchored in blue economy principles, exploring territorial approaches that promote the sustainable use of marine resources while strengthening socio-economic resilience.

On the eve of the 13th session of the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), to be held from 14 to 23 July 2025, in NY, under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Euskadi, represented by UN Etxea and Bermeo Tuna, has been selected to organise a high-level side event, entitled: Local transformation for global impact: Sustainable blue economy and multi-stakeholder governance to advance SDG14.

The event will demonstrate how the localization of the 2030 Agenda strengthens ocean governance, promotes inclusive partnerships, and enhances circular, regenerative blue economies. Participants will gain insights into actionable models, such as value chain innovation, sustainable fisheries, and regenerative tourism, that are adaptable to diverse socio-cultural contexts.

By bridging local expertise with global frameworks, this event highlights the critical role of place-based strategies and multi-level governance in achieving meaningful progress towards SDG 14. It also highlights how local and regional actors can take the lead in shaping a sustainable ocean future.

Speakers include representatives from UN Etxea, Bermeo Tuna World Capital, Hawaii Green Growth and the Local2030 Coalition, providing a rich, cross-continental dialogue on aligning local action with global ocean commitments (TBD).

The day before the side event, on 16 July, our gastronomic event will take place: “Basque Country, Sustainable Tuna & Wine Country”, to present the tuna value chain in the Basque Country to representatives of United Nations agencies in New York and countries with which the Basque delegation has institutional relations. The conference will be attended by institutional and business representatives and will end with a tasting pairing with tuna from Bermeo and wines, txakoli and cider from the Basque Country.
