European RCE Meeting 2023
From 12 to 14 September the Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE) Basque Country – Navarre and RCE Fryslân hosted the European Regional Meeting of RCEs 2023, on the theme of Transformative Education for Sustainable Regions. The meeting built on the experience of the Fryslân CER following the successful hosting of the European Regional Meetings 2022.
The first day of work started with a keynote speech on transformative education and international institutional frameworks by Ms Cecilia Barbieri (Chief of the Section for Global Citizenship Education and Peace Education at UNESCO).
Other speakers included Dr. Jonghwi Park (United Nations University Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies-UNU-IAS) and Mikel Ballesteros (Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque Government).
On the second day, the working day was more dynamic. Participants were divided into digital rooms to discuss one of the following two topics: Guidelines for data collection to measure SDG target 4.7 and Pathways towards a competency framework for transformative global citizenship education for sustainable development.
On the last day, the European RCE 2023 Network Assembly was held internally and consisted of a discussion on identifying current opportunities and challenges for European RCEs and on strengthening the ongoing communication and collaboration between them. The challenges and opportunities they face were also presented.
